The
Aphorisms
has been a
central work among the Hippocratic corpus constituting an
indispensable part of the curriculum of medical students throughout
the history of the Islamic civilization. It comprises brief medical
aphorisms each epitomizes a medical rule or therapeutic principle.
Many works explaining the Aphorisms
were carried out by outstanding Muslim physicians and scholars such as
‘Alā’ al-Dīn (Ibn al-Nafīs) al-Qurašiy, whose
work was not limited to the explanation of scientific facts pertaining
to the Hippocratic aphorisms but he rewrote the text adding his own
rectifications and corrections. An engaging and accessible
introduction throws light on the life and works of Hippocrates as well
as their interpretations. The text included is collated with five
original manuscripts from the libraries of Dār al-Kutub
al-Masriyya, Šūrā Council in Tehran and the Municipal
Library of Alexandria. An English translation of the introduction by
Dr Māhir ‘Abdul-Qādir concludes the book.
