The CCA includes a restaurant, a cafeteria, and buffet facilities for 250 persons with lighted fountain, reflecting mirrors and a magnificent panorama sweep of the Mediterranean Sea and the Bibliotheca Alexandrina.

 

The Planetarium Sphere

The Planetarium is housed in a metallic globe structure supported by two intersected steal beams. The sphere is externally multi-layered, the last of which is GRC:  glass-reinforced concrete layer.

The lower half of the sphere comprises 100 seats, while the upper half is globular screen (14m diameter) for displaying various astronomical materials. The Planetarium is equipped with the latest techniques and tools: video projector; star ball slide projector; and cinema projector, centrally controlled by state-of-the-art technology. The entrance is lightened with the light cells system, to intense the feeling of the universal presence of galaxies. The external lighting overcomes the visitor with the simulation of a planet rotating in a high velocity.

Digital Laboratory

This enterprise is considered the first fruits of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, offering advanced information services up to the standards of the elite libraries worldwide. The Laboratory’s main objective is to digitize rare manuscripts by state-of-the-art digital cameras, to process texts by specialized software and to supplement them with browsing tools and appropriate audio files. Hence, the unabridged texts are available for the general public all over the world, at the same time, the original manuscripts are kept and well preserved for generations to come.   The Virtual Browser

A state-of-the-art program, through which images of original manuscripts are digitized so that the user can virtually browse between the pages of any manuscript by simply touching the screen as though he were holding it in his hands.

The program includes a bilingual-translation of the browsed text with facts and commentaries. Thereby, when the user touches the translation option a corresponding text in English or French will appear.

Worked in a number of capacities at the World Bank since joining in 1972. Economist in education and human resources (1972-76); Division Chief for Technical Assistance and Special Studies (1977-80), and for Urban Projects in Europe, the Middle East and North Africa (1980-83); Director for Programs in West Africa (1984-87), Country Director for Central and Occidental Africa (1987-89), Technical Director for all Sub-Saharan Africa (1990-92), and Vice-President for Environmentally and Socially Sustainable Development (1993-98). In addition, he was active in promoting NGO-Bank relations, and served as Co-Chairman of the NGO-Bank Committee (1997-99). Prior to joining the World Bank, worked as a consultant in city and regional planning, and taught at Cairo University and Harvard University.

Ismail Serageldin is an Egyptian national, born in Guiza in 1944. He is married with one son. He is tri-lingual: Arabic, French and English.
